1779 - First American university was The University of Pennsylvania (one year before Harvard).
1790 - First capital of the United States was Philadelphia until it was moved to Washington in 1800.
1805 - First art museum and school of fine arts was the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
1809 - First American theatre was the Walnut Street Theatre (still active today).
1874 - First American zoo was established at 34th Street and Girard Avenue.
1932 - First cheesesteak was invented by the legendary "King of Steaks," Pat Olivieri (concession in South Philadelphia is still in operation).
1946 - First fully electronic computer was invented by Physics Professor John Mauchly and Teaching Assistant John Presper Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania.
