Defense Digest 9/08: On The Pulse...Other Notable Achievements
Robert Coleman(Philadelphia, PA) recently received the Distinguished Service Award given by the Philadelphia Association of Defense Counsel. The Distinguished Service Award is conferred annually by the PADC, with the purpose of honoring the member of the Bar who "best exemplifies the qualities or professionalism and dedication as defense counsel in the practice of law and in the promotion of the highest ideals of justice in the community." Nominations are made on the basis of activities during the preceding year or for career achievement. PADC contributes $1,000 to the recipient's favorite charity. Bob designated the Philadelphia Bar Foundation to receive his sum.
William L. Banton (Philadelphia, PA) participated in The National Judicial College's Managing Complex Litigation course held in Reno, NV. Along with other attorneys, Bill was asked to prepare a mock trial presentation in a case involving medical malpractice and product liability issues. This presentation was made to judges from around the country.
Michael Fox Orr (Jacksonville, FL) was re-elected to serve his second two-year term on the Florida Bar Board of Governors, Young Lawyers Division. Michael represents the 4th Judicial Circuit on the statewide board. Among its various duties and responsibilities, the YLD Board assists the Florida Bar's 52-member Board of Governors and operates CLEs and programs on behalf of the Florida Bar. The Board of Governors has exclusive authority to formulate and adopt matters of policy concerning the activities of the Bar, subject to limitations imposed by The Rules Regulating The Florida Bar.
Lenny Angulo, Construction Specialist (Jacksonville, FL), recently placed first in a 100-person competition at the University of North Florida. Lenny is working towards a degree in Construction Management at the University. The competition was sponsored by RJ Griffin Construction, a large regional construction company headquartered in Atlanta, GA. Participants had to respond to a Request for Proposal as if they were the estimator/project coordinator for a construction company bidding on a large project. The project was one that RJ Griffin actually bid, was awarded and constructed for the Georgia Power Company in the recent past. After submitting a written proposal for the job, which included costs, fees, contingencies and completion time, competitors had to defend their proposals before a board of judges comprised of the chief estimator from Griffin, the Vice President of the company, and a professor from the University.
Dave Williams (Bethlehem, PA) was a co-presenter at the Donald E. Weiand American Inn of Court of which he is a member. Dave's topic for the presentation was ethical issues in preparing for and defending a client at deposition and, specifically, counsel's obligations under the Professional Rules of Conduct when the attorney knows, or has a reason to know, that the client will (or has) testified falsely at a deposition.
William Walls (Pittsburgh, PA) was elected to the Allegheny County Bar Assosociation's Workers' Compensation Section Council for a two-year term.
Christopher Allen and Edward Galang (King of Prussia, PA) were presenters at the Ninth Annual Pennsylvania & New Jersey Chapters of the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals (IARP) Conference in Atlantic City, NJ. They presented the session entitled "Secret Weapons: Nurse Case Managers & Vocational Experts in Personal Litigation" to 150 rehabilitation nurses, nurse case managers and vocational experts. The main goal of the presentation was to expose the nursing and vocational experts to various issues that they may confront and should know when they are retained as experts in personal injury litigation. The presentation addressed how nursing care experts are utilized to address issues of liability, how vocational and nursing care experts are utilized to address issues of damages, and the practical aspects of litigation.
